The Tesla App: A New Owner's Guide to Every Feature
The Tesla app is the primary remote control for your car. Once it's set up, it replaces sitting in the car for almost everything you do when you're not driving — preconditioning, charging, locking, locating, and checking on Sentry. Here's what each part does and the features new owners most often miss.
Setup first
- Download the Tesla app (iOS or Android) and sign in with your Tesla account.
- Add your phone as a key: Controls > Locks > Phone Key > Add, then pair over Bluetooth. Walk-away locking engages automatically.
- Turn on notifications — they're essential for Sentry alerts, charge-complete, and software updates.
- Set up your key card as backup and keep it in your wallet for when your phone dies.
Controls — what you'll use most
| Feature | What it does | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Lock / Unlock | Remote door lock | Left phone at home |
| Climate | Pre-heat or pre-cool cabin + battery | 15–30 min before driving |
| Defrost | Max heat to clear ice/snow | Winter mornings |
| Flash / Honk | Find the car | Crowded parking lot |
| Charge port | Open/close remotely | Hands full |
| Frunk / Trunk | Remote open | Loading cargo |
| Summon | Move the car in/out of a tight spot | Narrow garages (needs Autopilot) |
Charging
The Charging tab shows the live charge rate (kW), time to completion, and a battery graph. You can set the charge limit here (it syncs with the touchscreen), schedule off-peak start times, and see real-time Supercharger stall availability and pricing nearby. The full charging history log is genuinely useful for tracking what home vs. away charging actually costs you.
Location
See your car's live GPS position, share it with a family member for pickup, and send recent or saved addresses straight to the car's navigation before you even get in.
Security in the app
- Sentry Mode toggle — arm or disarm remotely without getting in the car.
- Sentry alerts — get a push notification with a thumbnail when the car detects a bump or someone too close, so you don't have to pull the USB drive for minor events.
- Dashcam viewer — review clips directly in the app.
- PIN to Drive — manage it from the app (initial setup is on the touchscreen).
Climate features worth knowing
Beyond basic pre-conditioning, the app monitors Dog Mode / Camp Mode (set on the touchscreen, confirmed in the app), triggers Defrost remotely, and — on Model S/X with the HEPA filter — controls Bioweapon Defense Mode. Climate uses wall power when plugged in and battery power when not.
Tips new owners miss
- Wake the car before you walk up — tapping the app wakes it from sleep so Bluetooth connects faster.
- Share access — Controls > Locks > Manage Keys > Add Driver gives family limited app access (unlock + climate, not settings).
- Valet Mode — set on the touchscreen, then trigger from the app to limit speed, lock the glovebox, and hide your navigation history.
- Book service in the app — Tesla mobile service can often come to you for non-body work.
That's the remote-control side of ownership. Pair it with the settings worth changing first in our essential settings guide, and find quick answers to everything else in the new-owner FAQ.
