EV Registration Fees by State (2026)
Most states charge battery-electric vehicles an extra annual registration fee to make up for the gas taxes EVs don't pay. As of 2026, 41 states levy one (median about $150/year); 10 charge nothing extra. The highest are New Jersey ($270), Michigan ($267), Pennsylvania ($250), Georgia ($235), Indiana ($230). Texas adds a $400 fee at first registration on top of its $200/yr renewal.
