Musk Confirms Bigger Text Option Coming to Tesla Screens
The update addresses feedback from an elderly driver who found the current 'Large' setting insufficient for low-vision use.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the company will add a new large font option to the vehicle's user interface, responding directly to community feedback regarding screen readability for older drivers.
What Happened
The announcement came after Stephen Fleming posted on X about demonstrating Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to an elderly neighbor. Fleming noted that while his neighbor was interested in buying a Tesla, she struggled to read the screen text, even when the display was adjusted to the existing 'Large' print setting. He suggested adding an accessible UI option with a minimum 48-point type. Musk replied to the post stating, "We will add a large font option to the UI." Tesla currently offers Normal and Large text sizes, a feature introduced in 2023, but the current Large setting has been criticized for barely fitting in some areas of the interface and remaining too small for some users.
Why It Matters
Accessibility features are critical for expanding Tesla's customer base, particularly among older drivers who may benefit most from autonomy features like FSD (Supervised) and future Robotaxi services. Musk has previously identified nighttime driving as a key challenge for unsupervised autonomy, noting difficulties with spotting and avoiding pets in the dark. If small screen text is a barrier for elderly customers who can no longer drive comfortably at night, improving UI readability could remove a significant obstacle to adoption. This move aligns with other accessibility efforts, such as the Cybercab's wheelchair-height seats and Braille markings.
The Bottom Line
Musk did not specify a release date for the new font option, but it could potentially arrive with the upcoming Holiday Update. Implementing significantly larger text may require changes to the screen layout or a more responsive UI design to ensure elements remain functional and visible.
