How Long Do Tesla Batteries Last? Degradation & Replacement Cost (2026)

It's the question almost every Tesla shopper asks: will the expensive battery wear out and leave me with a huge bill? The short answer is reassuring — most Tesla batteries outlast the rest of the car, degrade slowly, and rarely need replacing. Here's what the warranty covers, what real-world data shows, and how to make yours last.

What the warranty guarantees

Tesla's battery and drive-unit warranty is separate from the basic vehicle warranty and is generous:

Crucially, the warranty guarantees the battery will retain at least 70% of its capacity over that period. If it drops below that while under warranty, Tesla repairs or replaces it.

How fast do they actually degrade?

Slowly — and not linearly. Real-world data from large owner fleets consistently shows Teslas losing roughly 10–15% of their range over the first 150,000–200,000 miles, with the steepest (still small) drop in the first 25,000 miles and a long plateau after that. In other words, a battery that's lost 8–10% early on may look almost the same many years later. Plenty of high-mileage Teslas are still running on their original packs well past 200,000 miles with most of their range intact.

What if it does need replacing?

It's rare outside of a warranty claim, but a full out-of-warranty pack replacement on a long-range Tesla can run roughly $10,000–$20,000 depending on the model and pack size — which is exactly why the 8-year warranty matters and why battery health is worth checking on a used car. For most owners, though, this is a "the rest of the car wore out first" situation, not a recurring cost.

How to make your battery last

Do these and battery wear becomes a non-issue for the life of the car. (See our charging FAQ for the details.)

What it means for cost of ownership

Because the pack typically lasts the life of the vehicle, battery replacement isn't part of most owners' real costs — but battery health does affect resale value. Our cost calculator lets you set a battery-health factor to see how it changes resale and total cost, and the depreciation estimator shows what your Tesla may be worth as it ages. Buying used? Always check the battery's health before you commit.

Want numbers for a specific car? Our battery degradation & range calculator turns these fleet curves into an estimate for any model, year, and mileage — including winter and hot-weather range.
