Tesla and Sunrun Form a 16 GW Virtual Power Plant to Help Power the AI Boom

Hundreds of thousands of home batteries — Powerwalls included — would be aggregated into the largest distributed power plant in the U.S., aimed squarely at surging data-center demand.

On June 24, 2026, Tesla, Sunrun, and Renew Home announced a framework to knit together more than 16 GW of distributed home batteries and smart devices into what they're calling the largest distributed power plant in the United States. The target customer is unusual: the soaring electricity demand of data centers and AI workloads, starting in Virginia's 'Data Center Alley.' News of the deal sent Sunrun's stock up as much as 26%.

How it works

The network combines hundreds of thousands of residential batteries — Tesla Powerwalls and Sunrun systems — with more than 8 million smart thermostats and devices from Renew Home. About 300 MW is immediately deployable in Virginia, growing to 500 MW by 2030, with a path to more than 1 GW through the regional grid operator's reliability programs. 'The grid of the 1800s cannot power the innovation of 2026,' said Sunrun CEO Mary Powell.

Why it's good news for Tesla owners

This is a vote of confidence in Tesla's energy business — and a glimpse at how a Powerwall can become more than a backup battery. Virtual power plants pay owners to share stored energy back to the grid at peak times, turning home storage into a small, recurring payback rather than a one-time purchase. As these programs scale, the economics of pairing a Tesla with solar and storage get more interesting.

The bigger picture

For anyone running the numbers on going electric, the takeaway is that the ecosystem around the car keeps growing in the owner's favor. If you're starting with the vehicle decision, our Tesla vs gas cost calculator lays out the eight-year cost of a Model 3 or Model Y against a comparable gas car in your state — charging, insurance, depreciation, and fees included.

The companies framed the agreement as a framework to build on, with deployments expanding over the coming years.
