Tesla's Quiet Powerhouse: Energy Storage Hits Record Highs

Beyond the cars, Tesla's battery business is booming — deploying a record amount of grid and home storage and posting its best-ever energy profits.

When people picture Tesla, they think of cars. But one of the company's fastest-growing and most profitable arms barely has wheels: its energy storage business. And right now, it's firing on all cylinders.

Record deployments

In its most recent results, Tesla deployed a record 14.2 gigawatt-hours of energy storage in the fourth quarter alone, capping a full year of 46.7 GWh deployed. That's a striking jump from the 31 GWh the company deployed the year before — roughly 50% growth in a single year. To put a gigawatt-hour in perspective: it's enough energy to power tens of thousands of homes for hours.

Record profits, too

The growth isn't just about volume. Tesla's energy generation and storage revenue reached about $3.37 billion for the quarter, up 18% year-over-year, and the segment posted record quarterly gross profit. Energy has quietly become one of Tesla's highest-margin businesses — a profitable counterweight to the ups and downs of the car market.

What's actually being deployed

Two products drive the numbers. Megapack is Tesla's utility-scale battery — shipping-container-sized units that power companies and grid operators install by the hundreds to store renewable energy and keep the grid stable. Powerwall is the home version, storing solar power and keeping the lights on during outages. Together they're turning Tesla into a serious energy company, not just an automaker.

Why it matters for owners

A Tesla that earns strong, growing profits outside of vehicles is a healthier, more resilient Tesla — and that's good for everyone in the ecosystem. It funds continued investment in the Supercharger network, software, and the next generation of vehicles, and it supports the strong used-car values owners benefit from. For homeowners, a Powerwall paired with solar can also make charging your Tesla at home even cheaper.
