Tesla's 2026.20.3 Update Adds a 'Hey Grok' Assistant, Dashcam Encryption and Parental Controls
A free over-the-air release brings a conversational AI assistant plus tangible privacy and safety upgrades to compatible cars overnight.
Tesla's 2026.20.3 software update, which began rolling out June 17, 2026, is a good reminder of one of the quieter perks of ownership: your car can get materially better while it sits in the driveway. The release adds a built-in voice assistant, encrypted dashcam footage, parental controls, and a new door-opening safety warning โ all over the air, at no cost.
'Hey Grok' comes to the car
The headline feature is a built-in xAI 'Grok' voice assistant. Say 'Hey Grok' and you can ask it to handle navigation and reminders conversationally. Tesla says the assistant is an early beta, is US English only to start, and that conversations are anonymous to Tesla.
Privacy and safety wins
Two changes stand out beyond the AI. Dashcam clips are now encrypted on the USB drive and can only be decrypted through the vehicle, the Dashcam Viewer app, or dashcam.tesla.com โ a real privacy upgrade. New Parental Controls (Controls > Safety > Parental Controls, set while in Park) can block the Browser, Theater, and Arcade. And a Blind Spot Warning on the Model S, X, and Y will stop a door from opening on the first press if it detects something approaching, like a passing cyclist.
Why it matters for owners
None of this requires a service visit or a dealer โ it just shows up. That over-the-air cadence is part of what makes a Tesla feel different to own, and it's one of the harder-to-quantify reasons the long-term value can hold up. If you're sizing up that long-term cost, our Tesla vs gas cost calculator breaks down the eight-year math against a comparable gas car in your state.
Updates roll out in stages, so not every compatible car gets a given release on day one โ but when it arrives, it's free.
