Waymo Opens to Everyone in San Antonio, San Diego, & Tampa
Service expansion includes rides to San Antonio International Airport, marking a significant milestone for autonomous transit.
Waymo has expanded full public access to its robotaxi service in San Antonio, San Diego, and Tampa, allowing anyone in these cities to hail a fully autonomous ride via the companyβs app.
What Happened
According to a statement from Waymo, the restriction that previously limited service to select users has been lifted. "Starting today, anyone in San Antonio, San Diego, and Tampa can download the Waymo app and hail a fully autonomous ride," the company wrote. This expansion notably includes service to San Antonio International Airport. Waymo noted that it has already welcomed hundreds of thousands of riders in these regions since opening limited service earlier in the year.
Why It Matters
The inclusion of major airport pickups represents a critical step in integrating autonomous vehicles into mainstream travel infrastructure. Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports for the City of San Antonio Aviation, described the move as a "significant milestone" for the city and travelers, offering a new option for visitors heading downtown or locals catching flights. In San Diego, the expansion has been highlighted by community leaders as a tool for inclusivity. Bob Kelly, Founder CEO of the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation, emphasized that self-driving technology helps older adults maintain independence by providing "safe, reliable, and accessible mobility options."
The Bottom Line
Waymoβs transition to full public availability in three major Texas and Florida markets signals a broadening of its operational footprint. With airport connectivity now live in San Antonio, the company is positioning its autonomous fleet as a viable alternative for both daily commutes and travel logistics, though questions remain regarding usage rates and future launch locations.
