Tesla FSD Clears Path for Ambulance While Stopped at Red Light
A Cybertruck autonomously turned right across three lanes to create a gap for an emergency vehicle without driver input.
New footage demonstrates Teslaβs Full Self-Driving (Supervised) handling a complex emergency scenario by autonomously clearing a path for an ambulance while stopped at a red light.
What Happened
Cybertruck owner @mrtimer2022 shared video on X showing his vehicle stopped in the middle of five lanes of traffic when an ambulance approached from behind. With the intersection largely blocked, the truck, operating at 0 mph with Self-Driving active, engaged its right turn signal and crept forward. FSD executed a right turn across three lanes into an open pocket, creating a clear lane for the ambulance to pass through the intersection without slowing. The system then merged the truck onto the new road and updated its navigation route to account for the unplanned maneuver.
Why It Matters
This incident highlights significant improvements in FSDβs ability to handle real-time traffic dynamics, particularly regarding emergency vehicles. The owner described the action as a purposeful effort to make a gap for the emergency rather than a simple pull-over. This capability contrasts with earlier iterations of the software, which struggled with such scenarios. The update aligns with recent Tesla developments, including the rollout of Automatic Collision Evasion for HW4 vehicles and the expansion of FSD v14 Lite to legacy Model S and X units, suggesting a broader push to enhance autonomous responsiveness across the fleet.
The Bottom Line
Teslaβs FSD is increasingly demonstrating the capacity to interpret and react to complex, non-routine traffic situations without driver intervention. With FSD v15 expected later this year or early next year, which will increase neural network parameters tenfold, handling edge cases like emergency vehicle yielding is expected to become even more robust.
