Tesla Cybercab to Let Riders See Rear and Side Camera Feeds
Tesla engineer confirms feature is in development to address passenger concerns about the vehicle's lack of physical mirrors.
Tesla is developing a software update that will allow Cybercab passengers to view rear and side camera feeds on demand during their ride. The move aims to provide riders with greater situational awareness in a vehicle that lacks traditional mirrors and a driver.
What Happened
Following a ride in the purpose-built robotaxi, Tesla enthusiast Dan Burkland requested that riders be allowed to "pull up the rear & repeater cameras on demand," citing peace of mind as the primary motivation. Evan, a UI software engineer at Tesla, responded to the request with a brief confirmation that the feature is "In development." Currently, camera feeds are only accessible when a rider arrives at their destination, displayed on a "Please Exit Safely" screen to check for traffic before opening doors. The new feature would extend this functionality to the duration of the trip.
Why It Matters
The Cybercabβs design eliminates side mirrors, a rear-view mirror, a steering wheel, and a brake pedal, which can create anxiety for first-time passengers accustomed to visual confirmation of their surroundings. By leveraging the vehicle's existing eight external cameras, Tesla can enhance the cabin experience without hardware modifications. This update is part of a broader wave of improvements teased by Cybercab chief engineer Eric Earley, which also includes new seating options. As Tesla expands its fleet beyond the more than 300 units currently operating in Austin, addressing rider comfort and transparency is critical for scaling the robotaxi service to new markets like Dallas.
The Bottom Line
The on-demand camera view feature remains in development with no confirmed release date. Because it is a software-based change, existing Cybercabs could receive the update without hardware changes, potentially helping Tesla address regulatory inquiries from NHTSA regarding the vehicle's visibility standards.
