Musk Says China Magnet Curbs Delayed Optimus Program by Two to Three Months

Tesla CEO cites export restrictions on electric motor magnets and complex hand mechanics as key hurdles to late 2027 public availability.

Elon Musk revealed that China’s export curbs on magnets used in electric motors set back Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot program by two to three months, while emphasizing that the robot’s hands remain the most technically challenging component.

What Happened

Speaking at the X Takeover event at Giga Texas on Saturday, Musk addressed the delays directly during a live interview with Tesla Owners Silicon Valley. He stated that China "prevented the export of magnets for use in electric motors," which caused a two-to-three-month setback for the Optimus initiative. Musk noted that Tesla is now working to bring the supply chain domestic, stating, "You’ve got to be able to make all the parts domestically." The issue relates specifically to permanent magnets in the arm actuators, where motors must be as small as possible.

Why It Matters

Musk identified the robot’s hands as the hardest part of the project, describing the need for fine motor skills as "shockingly difficult." He highlighted the challenge of achieving precision and force simultaneously, such as driving a small self-tapping screw into wood, and the difficulty of creating touch sensors that can withstand high cycle life without breaking. These technical hurdles, combined with the lack of a pre-existing supply chain for robot components, mean the initial production ramp will be "very slow," unlike automotive production. Musk also dismissed rival robot demonstrations as "canned" and not real, asserting that true AI capability is shown when a robot handles unseen scenarios, similar to how Full Self-Driving operates in new cities.

The Bottom Line

Tesla maintains an internal goal of producing more than 1,000 Optimus units per week by the end of 2026, with Musk aiming for public availability by late 2027. However, Tesla has not officially confirmed this date or released updated production figures, leaving the timeline dependent on overcoming significant supply chain and mechanical engineering challenges.
