Tesla Cybercab to Add On-Demand Camera Views for Passengers
Tesla UI engineer confirms the feature is in development after a rider requested rear and repeater camera access for peace of mind.
Tesla is developing a software update for the Cybercab that will allow passengers to view rear and side cameras on demand, a feature requested by riders seeking greater situational awareness in the driverless vehicle.
What Happened
The development was confirmed by Tesla UI software engineer Evan, known as @CarCoder on X, who responded to a request from Cybercab rider Dan Burkland with the phrase "In development." Burkland had shared photos of the vehicle's cabin screen and asked for the ability to pull up the rear and repeater cameras at will, citing "peace of mind" as the primary motivation. This exchange occurred late Friday, following public rides in Austin.
Why It Matters
The Cybercab’s design, which lacks a steering wheel, pedals, and traditional mirrors, relies entirely on camera systems for environmental awareness. Giving passengers direct access to these feeds addresses a specific anxiety point for first-time riders in a fully autonomous vehicle. The update aligns with Tesla’s recent efforts to refine the Cybercab experience, including a survey sent to early riders asking them to rate the touchscreen and select desired features. With the Austin fleet expanding to over 300 Cybercabs—an eightfold increase in 30 days—and plans to launch in Dallas, small software enhancements that build rider trust are becoming increasingly significant for scaling the robotaxi service.
The Bottom Line
The on-demand camera view is currently in development and has not yet been deployed. Tesla has a history of pushing minor software improvements to the Cybercab fleet via point releases, so riders may see this feature appear without a major announcement.
