Tesla Is Building Megachargers for Semis Where Truckers Already Stop
The first station in Ellabell, Georgia, features six stalls capable of delivering up to 1.2 megawatts of power each.
Pilot Flying J and Tesla are constructing more than a dozen megawatt-capable charging stations for the Tesla Semi across major U.S. freight corridors. The partnership places high-power charging infrastructure directly within Pilot’s existing travel center network, which serves as a primary stop for long-haul truckers.
What Happened
The first collaborative Tesla Megacharger station is already operational at a Pilot location in Ellabell, Georgia. This site includes six stalls, each capable of delivering up to 1.2 megawatts of power to a Tesla Semi. The design in Ellabell requires drivers to back into the charging bay, as pull-through charging is not available at this specific location. A second Pilot-Tesla station is scheduled to go online at a Flying J location in Tulare, California. Future sites are planned for Fort Stockton, Texas, and North Las Vegas, Nevada, with nine additional locations currently under construction along corridors including I-5 and I-10.
Why It Matters
Integrating Semi charging into existing travel centers addresses a critical logistical hurdle for electric fleet adoption: the availability of amenities during charging breaks. With a 30-minute top-up capable of boosting the Tesla Semi’s state of charge by 60%, drivers can utilize Pilot’s quick-service restaurants and other facilities while their rigs recharge. Shannon Sturgil, senior vice president of alternative fuels at Pilot, stated that the initiative aims to make fleet electrification more accessible by pairing heavy-duty charging with the services drivers already rely on. This move leverages Pilot’s extensive network, which already supports over 1,000 fast-charging stalls for passenger EVs, to expand into the heavy-duty sector.
The Bottom Line
Tesla and Pilot are actively deploying Megachargers for Semis at key trucking hubs, with the Ellabell, Georgia station live and multiple others under construction. The strategy focuses on combining high-power charging with existing driver amenities to support long-haul electric transportation.
