Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Can Now Do What Only Cybertruck Could
Powershare Home Backup extends home battery life by over two days when paired with Powerwall 3.
Tesla has expanded its bidirectional charging capabilities to its volume sellers, enabling the Model 3 and Model Y to serve as home backup batteries. Previously, this feature was exclusive to the Cybertruck.
What Happened
Tesla Energy announced on Tuesday that Powershare Home Backup is now available for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles paired with a Powerwall 3. The company states the feature can "extend your home backup by over 2 days." This capability was previously limited to the Cybertruck, which began supporting Powerwall 3 last month. According to Teslaβs updated Powershare page, every Model 3 and Model Y ordered in the U.S. or Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026, can use the feature. Some earlier vehicles may also qualify, which owners can verify by checking "Powershare Support: Enabled" under Software and Additional Vehicle Information on the touchscreen. The rollout is part of software update 2026.38.3, the same release that delivered Halloween Mode.
Why It Matters
This update significantly lowers the barrier to entry for vehicle-to-home power systems. Unlike competitors such as Ford and GM, which require separate inverters and backup hardware, Teslaβs solution leverages equipment many owners already possess. If a home has a Powerwall 3 and either a Wall Connector 3 or Universal Wall Connector, no additional equipment is needed; compatibility is enabled via software. During a grid outage, the Powerwall and car work together to provide up to 11.52 kW of continuous power. Tesla estimates the "over two days" backup duration based on a home using 30 kWh per day and a car starting at a 90 percent charge. However, there are limitations: Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ support is listed as "coming soon," and Model S and Model X are not included. Additionally, Grid Support, which allows Cybertruck owners in Texas to sell power back to the grid, is not available for Model 3 or Model Y.
The Bottom Line
Tesla has successfully extended bidirectional charging from the Cybertruck to its most popular models, fulfilling a long-term promise made by Elon Musk regarding the necessity of Powerwall integration. While the feature enhances energy resilience for eligible owners, it remains restricted to newer vehicles and specific hardware configurations.
