Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Now Offer Vehicle-To-Home Backup Power
The feature requires a Powerwall 3 and Wall Connector, costing approximately $15,585 in hardware and installation.
Tesla has expanded vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities to its most popular models, allowing the Model 3 and Model Y to serve as emergency power sources for residential homes during blackouts.
What Happened
Tesla announced on Tuesday that the Model 3 and Model Y can now function as backup power units, a feature previously exclusive to the Cybertruck within the company's lineup. The new capability, branded as part of the Powershare ecosystem, enables these vehicles to output 15 kW of power back to a home. The feature is available for vehicles purchased on or after October 1, as well as select earlier models. To utilize this functionality, owners must install specific hardware, including a Tesla Powerwall and a Wall Connector. This places the Model 3 and Y alongside other EVs capable of V2H, such as select Chevy, Cadillac, Kia, and Nissan models.
Why It Matters
While this feature enhances the utility of Tesla's mass-market vehicles, it comes with a significant financial barrier. Unlike the Cybertruck, which includes an onboard DC-to-AC converter and requires a less expensive setup (a Universal Wall Connector and Powershare Gateway for $1,970), the Model 3 and Y require the more complex and costly Powerwall 3 system. The Powerwall 3 costs approximately $15,000 including installation, and the Wall Connector adds another $585. For owners who already possess a Powerwall, the primary benefit is extending backup duration. Tesla states that connecting a Powershare-equipped Model 3 or Y can extend backup power by two days, assuming a household energy consumption rate of 30 kWh per day.
The Bottom Line
Tesla has effectively democratized vehicle-to-home power for its sedan and crossover owners, but the feature remains a premium option requiring substantial additional investment in energy storage hardware compared to the integrated solution found in the Cybertruck.
