Elon Musk Teases TSMC as Potential Terafab Partner

Musk confirms early talks are underway but emphasizes they remain just discussions without a confirmed deal.

Elon Musk has indicated that early discussions with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) could potentially bring the world’s leading contract chipmaker into Tesla’s ambitious Terafab semiconductor project.

What Happened

Musk acknowledged the conversations in a social media post, stating they are "just discussions" and that "something may come of it." This confirmation follows reports by Tim Culpan that outlined potential collaboration models, such as TSMC acting as an "anchor customer" for future facilities in Texas. Under this structure, TSMC could contribute process expertise and operational know-how, while Terafab provides capital and long-term purchase commitments. The Terafab project, jointly developed by Tesla and SpaceX, aims to produce more than one terawatt of AI compute capacity annually once fully built. Intel joined the effort in April 2026 and is expected to supply its 14A manufacturing process for the full-scale plant.

Why It Matters

For Tesla owners and the broader EV market, this potential partnership signals a strategic move to secure long-term chip supply for future products like Optimus robots, Cybercab vehicles, and planned space-based data centers. Musk has noted that while existing suppliers like Samsung remain important for near-term needs, future demand will eventually exceed what the global industry can currently deliver. Terafab is positioned as the long-term solution to this projected shortfall, similar to how Tesla addressed chip shortages during the pandemic but at a much larger scale. A partnership with TSMC would add the industry leader’s expertise to a project that already combines Tesla’s and SpaceX’s capital with Intel’s process technology.

The Bottom Line

While Musk confirmed that talks with TSMC are happening, he explicitly stated there is no deal yet. The only public confirmation remains the acknowledgment that conversations are occurring, leaving the prospect of this major collaboration open but unconfirmed.
