Tesla Adds Dynamic Headlight Leveling to Model 3 and Cybertruck in Software Update
Version 2026.38 introduces automatic low-beam adjustment to reduce glare for oncoming traffic.
Tesla has introduced a new software feature called Dynamic Headlight Leveling in its latest update, version 2026.38. The enhancement allows the vehicle to automatically adjust the aim of its low beams to improve nighttime visibility while minimizing glare for other drivers.
What Happened
The update, which began rolling out to a limited number of Model 3 and Cybertruck vehicles in the United States and the United Arab Emirates, utilizes internal motors to physically tilt the low-beam projectors. Unlike Teslaβs matrix high-beam system, which selectively dims individual LED segments, this new capability responds to changes in vehicle pitch. When the car accelerates, climbs a grade, or carries extra weight, the software counters the movement in real time to keep the beam aimed at the road surface rather than into the eyes of oncoming traffic.
Why It Matters
This software refinement addresses a common issue where headlight alignment can shift due to vehicle dynamics, potentially causing excessive glare. The change arrives amidst broader concerns about headlight glare, with some earlier Model 3 and Model Y vehicles previously subject to NHTSA recalls on the matter. For owners receiving the update, the system requires no new settings or user input. It represents another instance of Tesla using over-the-air software to optimize existing hardware, offering a potential mitigation for cars equipped with the necessary leveling hardware without requiring physical upgrades.
The Bottom Line
Dynamic Headlight Leveling is currently available on select Model 3 and Cybertruck examples in the US and UAE. The rollout is not tied to a single hardware revision, and Tesla has not published a broader schedule for when all eligible vehicles will receive the update.
