Tesla Upgrades China Model 3 With 16-Inch Screen and V2L; US Left Out
Chinese buyers gain 2.2 kW power export and new interior options, while US Model 3s remain limited to 15.4-inch displays.
Tesla China has announced significant hardware and software updates for the Model 3 and Model Y lineup, including a larger 16-inch touchscreen and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities. These changes are not currently available for the US Market, where the Model 3 retains a 15.4-inch display and lacks V2L support.
What Happened
Tesla revealed the updates on October 1 through marketing posters on its official Chinese channels. The primary hardware change is the center display, which now measures 16 inches on every current Model 3 trim in China, up from the previous 15.4 inches. Tesla stated the new screen offers higher resolution and refresh rates but did not provide specific numerical specifications. Additionally, Chinese buyers can now select a light gray "premium interior" paired with a black fabric headliner, mirroring options previously introduced for the US Model Y Premium.
Why It Matters
The most significant functional difference is the activation of vehicle-to-load power export. All Model 3 and Model Y vehicles currently sold in China can now output up to 2,200 W (2.2 kW) of AC power. Owners must purchase Teslaβs AC power-export adapter to use this feature, with the exception of the three-row Model Y L, which does not require an adapter. Tesla cited a camping scenario as an example, noting the system can simultaneously power a 600 W rice cooker, a 1 kW hot pot, and a 600 W electric kettle. This contrasts sharply with the US lineup, where V2L was launched in August but limited to the Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, and Cybertruck, leaving the entire US Model 3 range without this capability.
The upgrades coincide with aggressive financial incentives in China. Model 3 orders placed by October 31 receive a 5,000 yuan (approximately $740) discount on the final payment, stacked with 5-year 0% financing, an 8,000 yuan insurance subsidy, and an 8,000 yuan paint credit. These discounts lower the advertised starting price to 222,500 yuan (approximately $33,000), though the base RWD list price remains 235,500 yuan. Despite these reductions, the Model 3 remains more expensive than competitor BYDβs new Formula S, which starts at 189,900 yuan.
The Bottom Line
Tesla is differentiating its Chinese and US markets through feature availability and pricing strategies. While Chinese customers receive hardware upgrades like the 16-inch screen and V2L functionality alongside substantial financial incentives, US Model 3 buyers remain on older hardware specs without access to power export features. The US Model 3 continues to start at $36,990 with a 15.4-inch touchscreen, highlighting a growing feature gap between the two regions.
