Tesla Secures $30 Billion in Loans to Fund Future Projects

Tesla has not borrowed under the new agreements yet and has no plans to use them this year.

Tesla has arranged access to $30 billion in financing through three new agreements, though the company has not borrowed any money under these terms yet and does not plan to use them this year.

What Happened

According to a recent SEC filing, Tesla signed three borrowing agreements yesterday. The largest component is a $20 billion delayed-draw term loan, which allows Tesla to borrow in stages with repayment due by September 29, 2029. The remaining financing consists of an $8 billion five-year revolving credit line ending September 29, 2031, and a $2 billion 364-day revolving credit line initially ending September 28, 2027. All three agreements are unsecured, meaning Tesla did not pledge specific assets as collateral. Additionally, Tesla closed an older $5 billion revolving credit line scheduled to end in January 2028, having borrowed nothing under that previous arrangement.

Why It Matters

These agreements provide Tesla with significant financial flexibility during a period of major expansion. The company is currently investing in the Terafab project in Grimes County, Texas, alongside SpaceX, and has recently presented its new Semi factory in Nevada, which is designed to produce up to 50,000 trucks annually once fully ramped. Continued development and production costs for Optimus, which is not expected to generate revenue for years, also contribute to the need for accessible capital. While Tesla maintains substantial cash reserves, the new lines allow for staged borrowing with variable interest rates and require the company to maintain at least $5 billion in liquidity under the agreement's rules.

The Bottom Line

Tesla has secured $30 billion in unsecured financing options through three new agreements but has not drawn any funds yet. The move ensures capital availability for upcoming projects like Terafab, the Semi factory, and Optimus development, without imposing immediate debt obligations.
