Tesla Patents 'Electric Fan Car' Weeks Before Roadster Reveal
The patent describes four electric fans mounted to the rear diffuser to increase downforce and reduce drag.
Tesla has patented a new aerodynamic system for electric vehicles that utilizes fans to enhance downforce and reduce drag, a filing that comes just two weeks before the companyβs planned reveal of the next-generation Roadster.
What Happened
The patent, titled for an "electric fan car," describes a ducted fan system configured to increase downforce and reduce drag. The design features four electric fans mounted to the rear diffuser of an EV, connected to the vehicle's high-voltage battery and control system. While the patent diagrams resemble a Model S, Tesla is no longer producing that vehicle. The system works by creating an air inlet underneath the car, allowing airflow to push the rear down, while the fans pull turbulent air through the diffuser to create a vacuum effect, effectively sucking the car toward the pavement.
Why It Matters
Although car companies frequently patent technologies that never reach production, this filing coincides closely with the October 15 event where Tesla plans to showcase the Roadster. Industry observers suggest this technology could be key to meeting the Roadster's ambitious performance targets, such as Elon Muskβs claim of a zero-to-60-mph time under one second. While EVs generally have strong traction due to their weight and motor control, this fan system aims to improve aerodynamic slipperiness and cornering stability. Lars Moravy, Teslaβs top engineer, has previously described the Roadster as the "last, best driver's car" the company will make, raising the stakes for any performance-enhancing innovations revealed at the upcoming event.
The Bottom Line
There is no confirmation yet that this fan system will be implemented in a production vehicle. However, with the Roadster reveal scheduled for October 15, the timing of the patent suggests it could play a role in fulfilling the hypercar's performance promises.
