Tesla Optimus Gen 3 Shows Off Cleaner, Factory-Ready Design in New App Discovery
Extracted design files reveal matte black fairings and sealed joints, replacing the exposed linkages seen in the Gen 2.5 prototype.
Tesla may have inadvertently unveiled the third generation of its Optimus humanoid robot through design files discovered in a recent version of the Tesla smartphone app.
What Happened
Community member @wholemars extracted assets from the Android version of the Tesla app, revealing side-by-side renders of the Gen 3 robot next to the older Gen 2.5 prototype. The files, labeled βgen3β and validated by Grok as official interface models, depict a unit designed for industrial deployment rather than laboratory testing. Key visual differences include the removal of Gen 2.5βs exposed mechanical linkages and gold plating on the knees and shins. In their place, the Gen 3 design features matte black fairings on the lower legs, a contoured champagne gold body, and flexible covers that seal the joint where the torso meets the upper thighs to protect bearings from debris. The hands, which Tesla has stated carry 22 degrees of freedom, appear significantly more refined than those on earlier units.
Why It Matters
This discovery fills a visibility gap that persisted for much of the year, following Elon Muskβs March 31 statement that Optimus 3 was walking but required βsome finishing touchesβ before a public reveal. Musk had previously indicated that Tesla would delay the design reveal until closer to production to prevent competitors from copying specific elements. While no official reveal date has been announced, the presence of finished 3D models in the app suggests that the user interface owners will eventually use is moving beyond placeholder code. In July, app code also pointed to features like a dedicated robot phone key, consent screens for video and spatial data collection, and alert systems for low battery or mechanical faults. Manufacturing efforts are proceeding in parallel, with Tesla removing original Model S and Model X lines at Fremont to accommodate a planned capacity of one million robots per year, while a dedicated Optimus factory at Giga Texas nears completion ahead of a targeted 2027 start.
The Bottom Line
Official design files for Optimus Gen 3 have surfaced in the Tesla app, showcasing a sealed, factory-ready aesthetic with matte black fairings and refined hands, signaling that the robot is approaching production readiness despite the lack of an official reveal date.
