Musk Announces Plan for Austin-San Antonio Hyperloop Tunnel

The proposed 'precursor Hyperloop' aims to cut travel time between the cities to under 30 minutes at speeds above 200 mph.

Elon Musk has announced that The Boring Company is working on a "simple, precursor Hyperloop" tunnel connecting Austin and San Antonio. The proposed system targets speeds above 200 mph, aiming to reduce a drive that can take up to two and a half hours to a consistent trip of under 30 minutes.

What Happened

Musk shared the update on X on Sunday in response to an AI-generated video depicting human colonies on other worlds, captioning it, "This is the future we shall bring into being." In the same thread, Musk detailed how the service would operate, noting that because the Loop/Hyperloop is express with no intermediate stops, a user could travel from an Austin parking lot to a San Antonio restaurant in about 30 minutes, provided both locations have Loop stations. This model mirrors the company’s existing operations in Las Vegas, where riders access the tunnel network via small, garage-style stops rather than a single central terminal.

Why It Matters

This announcement comes shortly after The Boring Company closed a $3 billion funding round led by United Arab Emirates investors earlier this month, valuing the company near $23 billion. This capital injection provides more financial resources for speculative projects than were available during the company’s earlier Texas pitches, such as the stalled 2021 Austin-San Antonio tunnel concept and the unsuccessful bid for a San Antonio airport loop. However, the proposal remains in the conceptual stage, contrasting with the company’s active construction projects, including the Nashville tunnel linking downtown to the airport and the expanding Las Vegas network.

The Bottom Line

While The Boring Company has secured significant new funding, the Austin-San Antonio Hyperloop is currently just a concept posted on social media. The proposed 80-mile tunnel at speeds not yet demonstrated by the company over real distances would dwarf its previous achievements, but for now, the project exists only as a plan rather than a construction site.
