Tesla's Mysterious Robovan Gives a Sneak Peek With Optimus in Terafab Video

Concept render credited to SpaceX shows Robovan sharing an elevated roadway with a Tesla Semi and Cybercab inside the planned 2.5-mile facility.

Elon Musk posted a new video of the planned Terafab facility Thursday morning, and while the building itself is the centerpiece, two products still awaiting production โ€” Optimus and the Robovan โ€” steal the frame in a concept render credited to SpaceX.

What Happened

The render shows Optimus robots working the grounds of the roughly 2.5-mile-long facility planned for Gibbons Creek in Grimes County, while a Robovan glides along an elevated roadway cutting through the building, sharing the frame with a Tesla Semi and a Cybercab.

Robovan is the boxy, driverless people and cargo mover Musk unveiled alongside Cybercab at the "We, Robot" event in October 2024. He pitched it to move up to 20 passengers or handle freight at a target cost under a dollar per mile, with no steering wheel or pedals โ€” the same layout as Cybercab.

Nearly two years later, Robovan still has no confirmed production timeline and hasn't appeared in factory footage, making Thursday's render one of the only recent looks at the vehicle.

Why It Matters

Optimus, by contrast, is further along. Tesla began converting Fremont's old Model S and X assembly line into a Gen 3 Optimus production line earlier this year, with Musk visiting on July 1 to mark the changeover. A second, larger plant under construction at Giga Texas targets volume production in summer 2027 and eventual capacity of 10 million units per year.

The video also underscores Terafab's scale and momentum. Tax abatement agreements with Grimes County are signed and active, SpaceX has sent its first $10 million payment, and the capex tied to this phase is $16.8 billion โ€” one of the first hard numbers attached to the joint Tesla-SpaceX-xAI venture since it was unveiled in March.

The Bottom Line

The render offers a glimpse of Tesla's planned future lineup and the scope of Terafab, but Robovan remains without a production timeline. For now, it exists largely as a concept โ€” one that has already drawn 5.5 million views on X within a day.
