Tesla's Terafab AI Chip Factory Project Expects Location Announcement Soon

The vertically integrated semiconductor plant, planned to produce over 1 terawatt of AI compute annually, will support Optimus and Full Self-Driving.

Elon Musk said Tesla's massive Terafab semiconductor project is expected to announce its final location soon, with a dedicated product launch planned for the announcement rather than an earnings call disclosure.

What Happened

Musk announced on Tesla's recent earnings call that the company expects to reveal where Terafab will be built in the near future. The project, first unveiled in March, is designed as a vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing facility that would produce chips for Tesla and other Musk companies without relying on third-party manufacturers. The plant is planned to generate over 1 terawatt of AI compute each year, supporting initiatives including Optimus humanoid robots, Full Self-Driving, and broader AI projects across the enterprise. Intel joined the project in April, contributing manufacturing expertise and consulting as one of only three companies capable of producing sub-5 nanometer chips at scale alongside TSMC and Samsung.

Why It Matters

The facility represents a critical bottleneck removal for Tesla's most ambitious programs. Musk indicated that Terafab is essential to scaling Optimus production, which he has suggested could become the biggest product of any kind in history. Without sufficient AI chip supply, Tesla would be constrained in its ability to expand both autonomous driving capabilities and humanoid robot manufacturing. The plant will not be located on Giga Texas property—Musk noted it would simply be too large to fit there.

The Bottom Line

Terafab's location announcement is expected to arrive as a standalone reveal rather than during an earnings call, with Musk stating the project deserves its own day in the spotlight. Whether the site ends up in Grimes County, Texas, as Business Insider previously reported—though unconfirmed—or elsewhere remains to be seen when Tesla makes the official disclosure.
