Tesla Adds New Traction Control Modes for Better Handling in Any Conditions
The feature, arriving via the 2026 Summer Update, brings Auto, Slippery Surface, and Stuck Assist modes to Model 3 and Model Y owners.
Tesla is rolling out a new Traction Control Modes feature that will give Model 3 and Model Y drivers more granular control over their vehicles' handling in challenging conditions.
What Happened
The feature arrives as part of Tesla's 2026 Summer Update, which the company announced last week. Three modes are available: Auto for normal driving, Slippery Surface for icy or wet roads, and Stuck Assist for snow, mud, or sand. The mode resets to Auto at the start of each drive. Access is via Controls > Dynamics > Traction Control Mode. Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck already included similar drive modes; this marks an expansion to Tesla's more affordable models.
Why It Matters
Model 3 and Model Y owners who frequently encounter adverse weather conditions now have a dedicated tool to adjust traction behavior without fully disabling stability systems. The feature also applies when using Full Self-Driving, which some drivers may prefer not to rely on in snow, rain, or ice. Tesla notes that Stuck Assist is not a complete solutionβsituations like driving in sand still require driver actions such as airing down tires for improved grip.
The Bottom Line
Tesla's Summer Update is currently rolling out and should reach most of the fleet over the coming weeks. Owners without access by late August may need to wait longer, as Tesla historically deploys seasonal updates on a conservative schedule.
