Tesla Expands Ridesharing Service In California To New Hotspot

The service now includes pickups and drop-offs at San Francisco International Airport using Model Y vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving technology.

Tesla has extended its Bay Area ride-hailing service to include pickups and drop-offs at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), adding one of California's busiest airports to its growing transportation network.

What Happened

The expansion, announced via Tesla's official channels on July 21, allows users in the region to request rides directly to and from SFO. The company secured a limousine permit for SFO operations that became effective March 20, 2026, remaining active through January 31, 2027. Vehicles operating the service display authorized limousine permits issued by the City and County of San Francisco. Tesla's ride-hailing program relies on Model Y vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology, with human safety drivers present in compliance with state regulations. The Bay Area geofence spans from north of San Francisco to south of San Jose. This addition follows earlier progress at San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC), where Tesla expanded service in late 2025.

Why It Matters

For travelers seeking electric, app-based transportation integrated with Tesla's ecosystem, the SFO addition provides a new option connecting major transportation hubs. The service covers high-demand corridors between residential, commercial, and now airport locations across the Bay Area. Rides are booked through Tesla's dedicated ride-hailing application, which handles matching, routing, and payments using standard ride-hailing pricing models.

The Bottom Line

Tesla's California ride-hailing program launched in July 2025 alongside operations in Austin, Texas. With SFO now operational, Tesla has engaged with three Bay Area airports—SFO, SJC, and Oakland International—as early as September 2025 to secure necessary approvals for passenger transport.
