Tesla Battery Recycling Efforts Increased 20% Last Year

The company recycled over 14,000 metric tons of battery material in 2025, equivalent to roughly 46,000 long-range packs.

Tesla reported a milestone in its sustainability efforts last year, with battery recycling volumes rising 20% compared to 2024, according to the company's 2025 Impact Report.

What Happened

Tesla recycled over 14,000 metric tons of battery material through a combination of in-house processing at its Gigafactories and collaborations with third-party recycling partners. The company said that amount is equivalent to the resources needed for approximately 46,000 long-range battery packs—a +20% increase from 2024. Tesla designs its batteries for longevity exceeding 200,000 miles and prioritizes repairs, remanufacturing, and second-life applications before full recycling. Once packs are decommissioned, Tesla ensures 100% are recycled with no materials sent to landfills, recovering lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper through advanced hydrometallurgical processes capable of achieving recovery rates up to 98%.

Why It Matters

For current and prospective EV owners, Tesla's closed-loop approach addresses one of the longstanding criticisms of electric vehicles: battery waste at end-of-life. By recovering critical metals with high efficiency and reintegrating them into new battery production, Tesla reduces reliance on virgin mining while stabilizing supply chains for materials like lithium and cobalt amid rising global EV demand. This positions battery recycling as both an environmental solution and a potential competitive advantage as the fleet ages.

The Bottom Line

The 20% year-over-year growth in recycling volume reflects expanding infrastructure and operational scale as more Tesla vehicles reach end-of-life or generate manufacturing scrap. Continued investment in this area is expected to support both Tesla's sustainability goals and long-term business resilience as the EV market matures.
