Tesla Is Using Vehicle Microphones to Improve Build Quality

The system monitors cars for squeaks and rattles as they autonomously navigate Gigafactory Texas production line testing.

Tesla is deploying the microphones built into its vehicles to catch build quality issues before cars leave the factory, VP of Engineering Lars Moravy revealed in a recent interview.

What Happened

Moravy told Herbert Ong that Teslas rolling off the line at Gigafactory Texas now autonomously drive themselves through a "bumps, squeaks, and rattles" (BSR) testing section of final assembly. While cars navigate this portion of the production line, their cabin microphones simultaneously listen for any abnormal noises that could indicate loose or improperly installed components. Moravy said Tesla is developing what it calls "Full Self-Hearing," an AI system designed to detect minor imperfections so they can be corrected before delivery.

Why It Matters

For owners and prospective buyers, this approach targets one of the more common complaints from early Tesla vehicles: interior squeaks and rattles that developed over time. By catching these issues at the factory, Tesla aims to ensure every vehicle leaves without creaks or squeals. The company manufactures over 1.6 million vehicles annually, and while build quality has notably improved in recent years especially in U.S. production, acoustic end-of-line testing adds a new layer of precision that competitors are also adopting.

The Bottom Line

Using existing cabin microphones during production line testing is an unconventional but efficient use of hardware Tesla already builds into every vehicle. Ford and other automakers use similar acoustic analysis AI for components like seat motors and climate control units, suggesting this type of quality assurance may become more common across the industry.
