Tesla Expands Massive Safety Feature Worldwide in Latest Update
The blind spot warning now works while parked to prevent dooring accidents with cyclists.
Tesla has expanded its "Blind Spot Warning While Parked" safety feature worldwide through Software Update 2026.20.6, bringing the dooring-prevention system to more vehicles beyond the Model 3.
What Happened
The feature, which initially launched with the Model 3 "Highland" in 2024 and later came to the Cybertruck this past Spring, is now rolling out to the new Model Y, 2021 and newer Model S, and 2021 or newer Model X. When an approaching object such as a bicyclist is detected in the blind spot while parked, the system sounds a chime and prevents the door from opening on the initial button press. Occupants must wait and press the button a second time to override the warning.
Why It Matters
Dooringβwhen a driver or passenger opens a car door into the path of an oncoming cyclist or motorcyclistβis among the most common types of cycling accidents, accounting for 10 to 20 percent of bike-related crashes in major cities. According to the League of American Bicyclists, over 17,000 dooring-related incidents were treated in the U.S. over the course of a decade, often involving fractures, contusions, and head trauma. By warning occupants before they open doors into oncoming traffic, Tesla's system could reduce these collisions in urban environments where cyclists are most vulnerable.
The Bottom Line
Tesla's dooring-prevention feature is now available across its current model lineup following the 2026.20.6 update, representing a significant expansion of the safety technology beyond its original Model 3 rollout.
