Tesla Begins Rolling Out FSD v14-Lite to HW3 Vehicles After Yearslong Gap
Distilled neural network brings latest self-driving features to older hardware that had been stuck on FSD v12.
Tesla has started rolling out FSD v14-Lite to early-access customers with HW3 hardware, marking the first significant self-driving update for older vehicles in over a year.
What Happened
FSD v14-Lite began deploying via Tesla software update 2026.20.5.1 as originally promised by Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's VP of AI. The update distills the massive neural network from newer AI4 vehicles down to approximately 15% of its original size to fit within HW3's more limited memory footprint. Early-access testers reported that key features like Start from Park and Arrival Options are included in the build, with parking performance described as smooth on par with the non-distilled v14 version.
Why It Matters
HW3 vehicles have been stuck on FSD v12 while AI4 cars received ongoing updates due to memory constraints. Tesla confirmed it intends to eventually upgrade legacy HW3 hardware, but v14-Lite provides an immediate improvement path for owners of older vehicles. Early reviewers noted major improvements in traffic handling smoothness compared to the older v12 build they had been using for years.
The Bottom Line
Tesla is rolling out FSD v14-Lite to early-access testers now and plans a wider release based on their feedback over the coming weeks. Because it shares the same architecture as the primary v14 branch, international markets including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, and South Korea could potentially receive the update in the future.
