An App Flagged This Tesla Model 3 Battery as Degraded. Tesla's Own Test Said Even Worse

A 2022 Model 3 Performance showed 88% battery capacity after 31,000 miles of careful ownership.

A used Tesla Model 3 Performance bought with just 1,000 miles on the odometer showed battery degradation that surprised its owner, with third-party and Tesla's own diagnostic tools returning different health readings.

What Happened

The 2022 Model 3 Performance, purchased by Tech Motoring at five months old, has accumulated over 31,000 miles. The owner treated the battery gently—charging mostly on a Level 2 home wall box and keeping state of charge between roughly 30% and 80%. Using data from third-party app Recurrent, which estimates battery health by monitoring charging behavior, range, mileage, and climate exposure compared against similar vehicles in its database, the owner received an initial estimate of 89% health. A separate estimate came in at 92%. But when running Tesla's built-in battery health test—which requires the car to be plugged in, fully discharged, then recharged for an accurate reading—the result was even lower: 88% remaining capacity.

Why It Matters

The owner's experience highlights how mileage alone tells little about a battery pack's true condition. Early life as a demo car—where vehicles are often charged without regard for longevity and left sitting at high states of charge between short drives—can leave lasting effects that show up months or years later. The 88% reading falls below both third-party estimates, suggesting Tesla's test may be more precise, or that the app's comparison database doesn't fully account for this vehicle's specific usage history. Still, the car retains enough capacity to deliver a real-world range of roughly 276 miles versus its original EPA estimate of 303 miles—well above Tesla's minimum 70% threshold for warranty claims.

The Bottom Line

Buyers in the used EV market should check battery health before purchase, even on low-mileage examples. Third-party tools like Recurrent can provide a baseline estimate, but vehicles with hard early lives may report lower than expected when tested directly by the manufacturer.
